Engraved, then oiled
The oil goes on after the cut, which darkens the engraving against the grain. Plaques oiled before engraving show a pale cut that disappears from two metres away.

Walnut for a dark room, oak for a light one. The engraving reads by contrast, and a dark plaque on a dark wall loses the words entirely.
