Things you can produce tonight
- A letter — ten minutes, and it outranks anything you could have bought
- A booked table at the place you went on your first date
- The photographs from the last year, printed at a pharmacy and put in a cheap frame that night
- A playlist of the songs from your first year together, with a note about each
- Breakfast in bed and the whole morning cleared
- A digital print of your vows, printed and framed within an hour
Same-day gifts that do not look last-minute
- Champagne and two proper glasses, not the ones you own
- Flowers from a real florist, ordered by phone before noon
- A voucher for something specific with a date already booked
- A book they mentioned, with an inscription on the first page
- Their favourite bottle, wrapped, plus a written invitation to a night away next month
The gift of a booked date
A voucher is a last-minute gift. A voucher with a date, a booking reference and childcare already arranged is a planned one. The difference takes twenty minutes of phone calls and it is entirely visible from the outside.
Print the confirmation. A screenshot on a phone is not a gift.
What to write in the card
Do not apologise for the gift. Write three specific things from the last year — a moment, a joke, something they did that you noticed. Specificity is what makes a card read as considered, and it is available to you at 11pm with no shops open.
What not to do
Do not buy a gift set from a supermarket. Do not send flowers from the office with a typed message. Do not say the words “I didn't have time” — everyone has the same amount and it is the one sentence that turns a late gift into a slight.
Set yourself up for next year
Put the date in a calendar with a three-week reminder, and a second at one week. Keep a running note of things they mention wanting. Two minutes of admin removes this article from your life permanently.
From Sagevow
A personalised keepsake — names, date, the vows themselves — outlasts every other anniversary gift on the list.
