Tell people in the right order
Parents and children first, and by phone or in person. Then siblings and grandparents. Then closest friends. Then the wider circle. Then, if you want, social media.
If any family relationship is complicated, make that call earlier rather than later — being told last is what stings, not the news itself.
Wording for social media
- "She said yes — and then we ate an entire cake. 14 June 2026."
- "Turns out the answer was yes. Engaged, and slightly in shock."
- "We're getting married. Same walk, same bench, better ending."

Wording for a printed or emailed announcement
"Anna Reyes and Tom Whitfield are delighted to announce their engagement. A wedding will follow in the autumn of 2026."
For a family-hosted announcement: "Mr and Mrs David Reyes are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Anna to Tom Whitfield, son of Mr and Mrs Peter Whitfield." Formal, brief, and it still reads well framed.
Announcement photographs that are not the ring close-up
The ring photograph is compulsory and fine. Add one of you both, taken the day it happened — slightly windblown and genuinely happy beats a styled shoot two months later. Hands on a coffee cup, a shot from behind walking away, or a photograph someone else took of you laughing.
If you plan a proper engagement shoot, save one image for the save-the-date.
Answering the question everyone asks next
"Have you set a date?" — you will hear it forty times in a week. Have one sentence ready: "Not yet, we're enjoying this bit first." Repeat it without apology. You do not owe anyone a timeline in the first month.
