Nobody wants to be the only person at the party holding a present, or the only one not. Here is the plain answer on engagement gift etiquette.
In this guide
- The short answer
- When a gift is more expected
- When you can arrive empty-handed
- What to give if you are unsure
- If you did not bring one and everyone else did
The short answer
You are not obliged to bring a gift to an engagement party. Attending is the gift, and the couple will receive a wedding present from you later.
That said, most guests bring something small, and it is a kind thing to do. Between $30 and $100 is normal, and it should be clearly less than what you plan to spend on the wedding gift.
When a gift is more expected
- You are immediate family or in the wedding party
- The party is a formal, seated, hosted dinner
- The invitation came with a registry link — rare, but explicit
- You cannot attend the wedding and want to mark the occasion
- The couple are hosting several events and this is the one you attend
When you can arrive empty-handed
Casual drinks or a backyard party. An invitation that says "no gifts". A party thrown by a mutual friend where the group is contributing together. Any event you are attending as someone's plus-one.
A bottle and a card covers you in almost every case.
What to give if you are unsure
Something consumable or small and personal: a good bottle, a candle, a photo frame, a keepsake box, a voucher towards the honeymoon. Avoid anything large, anything they would register for, and anything that assumes a colour scheme or a home style.
If you truly cannot decide, a handwritten card with a genuine note about the two of them is never wrong.
If you did not bring one and everyone else did
Nothing happens. Nobody keeps a list. If it bothers you, send something the following week with a note saying you wanted to send it properly — which is a nicer gesture than a hurried bottle anyway.

Newly engaged? The first thing most couples order is a save-the-date, and the second is something to keep from the day it started.
