They involve overlapping guest lists and similar-looking photographs, but a bridal shower and an engagement party do different jobs and follow different rules.

The one-line difference
An engagement party celebrates the news and includes everybody — both families, all genders, the whole circle. A bridal shower celebrates the person getting married, is traditionally hosted for them by someone else, and comes with gifts.
Timing follows: engagement party within three months of the proposal, shower two weeks to two months before the wedding.
Who hosts and who attends
- Engagement party — hosted by family or the couple; everyone invited to the wedding
- Bridal shower — hosted by the wedding party or a close relative, never by the honouree
- Shower guests are a subset: close friends and female family, traditionally
- Couples' showers, with both partners and all genders, are now common and entirely correct
- Anyone invited to either must be invited to the wedding
Gifts: the actual difference
Engagement party gifts are optional and small. Shower gifts are expected and usually come from the registry — that is the point of a shower. A guest attending both plus the wedding should expect three gifts, which is exactly why guest lists for the first two should stay tight.
If your circles overlap heavily, consider skipping the engagement party altogether.
Format and tone
Engagement parties are evening, mixed, drinks-led, loose. Showers are daytime, seated, food-led, with games and a gift-opening segment. Trying to combine them produces an event that satisfies nobody — pick one and do it properly.
Can you skip one?
Yes, either. Plenty of couples skip the engagement party and go straight to a shower; plenty skip the shower entirely, especially for second marriages or when guests are travelling far. Neither is compulsory and nobody keeps score — the only real obligation is that anyone you invite to a pre-wedding event gets an invitation to the wedding itself.

Newly engaged? The first thing most couples order is a save-the-date, and the second is something to keep from the day it started.
